Quantifying Cognitive and Motor Impairment in Adults Living with Sickle Cell Disease

Quantifying Cognitive and Motor Impairment in Adults Living with Sickle Cell Disease

Brief description of study

We are developing an objective method for assessing motor and cognitive impairment in adults with SCD and using it to determine how we can understand the impact of SCD on aging especially with respect to cognitive impairment and motor performance in activities of daily living.

Detailed description of study

The study will take place at the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab located at Penn Medicine Rittenhouse at 1800 Lombard Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146.

We are looking for two types of individuals:
  1. Participants for our control group: Healthy adults without SCD and without brain impairments who are above the age of 18.
  2. Participants for our Test group: Adults with SCD that are not in/nor have had a vaso-occlusive pain crisis in the past 7 days and are above the age of 18.
Your participation in this study will last for approximately 4 hours (one 4-hour session or two 2- hour sessions based on your preference).

You complete cognitive & motor assessments and complete two tasks with the haptic robot while data is collected. After interacting with the robot, subjects will be asked to complete surveys on their experience.

You will be compensated a total of $50 USD for completion of the study. $25 for the completion of the cognitive and motor assessments and $25 for the completion of the robot assessment.
