Study of Direct Brain Recording and Stimulation for Memory Enhancement (Data Coordinating Center Protocol) (PRIME)

The purpose of this research study is to learn more about how the brain stores and retrieves different kinds of information from memory, and whether brain stimulation can improve the storage and retrieval of memories. We are enrolling subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy, who are expected to undergo placement of electrodes on the surface of their brain or in deep brain areas for the purpose of identifying the source of epilepsy. This study is designed to understand how activity recorded on these electrodes relates to memory processes and whether stimulating these electrodes with very small pulses of electricity can improve memory. Stimulating small areas of the brain with small electrical pulses is a normal part of the evaluation for epilepsy surgery in many, but not all patients, depending upon where their seizures come from.
