Hyperpolarized xenon functional lung imaging in COPD patients undergoing targeted lung denervation
Brief description of study
For information regarding study objectives, please see section 8 of the attached protocol. In the context of targeted lung denervation (TLD), we expect the most informative aspect of altered lung function to be related to regional ventilation, as well as possibly the timing of regional inhaled/exhaled gas flow with respect to diaphragm motion. We hypothesize that a successful procedure will reduce airway resistance and mucus hypersecretion in targeted areas such that inhaled gas reaches these regions more completely upon inhalation, as well as in phase (rather than delayed) with respect to diaphragm motion and total inhaled gas flow. We expect that follow-up imaging will show global increases in perfusion, indicating that the TLD procedure was successful.
