Improving Clinical Outcomes of Auditory Brainstem Implantation with Speech-Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses

Brief description of study

The goal of this study is to improve the reliability of acquiring open-set speech recognition following ABI placement for retrocochlear deafness, to evaluate whether state of consciousness influences speech-based ABR.
The researchers hypothesize that: 1) It will be possible to elicit speech-based ABR from surgically anesthetized patients. 2) Surgically anesthetized patients will have a different waveform when under sedation compared to when awake. Study participants will include volunteers at Pennsylvania Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery, undergoing neurosurgical procedures - for which they will be surgically anesthetized and for which they will be undergoing BAER recordings as part of the standard of care for their planned intervention.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    retrocochlear deafness,neurosurgery
  • Age: Between 18 Years - 99 Years
  • Gender: All
