Brain Arterio-Venous Metabolomic Profiling

Brain Arterio-Venous Metabolomic Profiling

Brief description of study

The research study is being conducted to better understand brain metabolism, i.e. how the brain uses and consumes the various nutrients that are available in the blood. Changes in brain metabolism have been implicated in dementia and psychiatric disorders, as well as short- and long-term outcomes of traumatic brain injury and stroke, however we still don’t understand it very well. To better understand brain metabolism, we will measure metabolites like glucose, amino acids, and others in the blood entering the brain (the artery) and the blood exiting the brain (the veins). You are eligible because you are undergoing a diagnostic cerebral angiogram, meaning your arteries are already going to be accessed during your procedure. Access to your venous system would be obtained through an additional procedure for research purposes.
