The Gen-Y Study: Randomized trial of universal vs. guideline-directed germline testing among young adults with cancer
Brief description of study
Our study aims to determine whether genetic testing should be recommended for young adults with cancer. This type of testing can show if your cancer may be caused by inherited risk. This information can help guide effective screening and treatment for cancer in young adults and their families.
This is a randomized study, this means you will be placed into one of two possible study group by a computer. Neither you nor the researchers will decide which group you are placed in.
One group will receive care as recommended based on national guidelines, the second group will be provided genetic testing commonly used for cancer care.
Detailed description of study
Initial duration of participation may be up to 12 months. You will not receive any monetary compensation to participate. A potential benefit of the study is learning about an underlying genetic risk that you may have.
Participation will include:
1. Review of your medical history, as well as your family’s, for signs of inherited cancer risk
2. Referral for a genetic counseling visit as needed
3. Potential genetic testing for inherited cancer risk using saliva or blood samples
4. Mostly remote study activities
