Aging Brain Cohort Dedicated to Diversity Study (ABCD2)

Aging Brain Cohort Dedicated to Diversity Study (ABCD2)

Brief description of study

This research involves the study of aging and age-related conditions that can affect memory and thinking in an attempt to improve diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders. This study is designed to gain scientific knowledge that may help people in the future.

The study aims to recruit African Americans because this population is not well represented in similar research studies and this omission may affect the usefulness of the findings. The study will recruit African American that are cognitively normal, ages 65 years and older and their study partners over the course of up to four years for baseline and longitudinal visits.

The purpose of this research is to collect, store, and analyze information over a four-year period from individuals who have no symptoms of memory loss at the start of the study in order improve our understanding of age-associated brain changes and our ability to diagnose and treat brain diseases as early as possible. Study procedures include questionnaires and tests to assess memory and thinking, imaging studies of the eye and brain, and drawing blood samples.

The study is being conducted at the University of Pennsylvania Penn Memory Center. The data that we collect in this study may be shared with researchers outside of this study, so that other researchers are learning from people enrolled in this research study. Information that can identify participants will not be included with any shared research data.
