ACUTE EFFECTS OF KETONE SUPPLEMENTATION ON SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE RESPONSES TO ALCOHOL IN HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS

Study Overview

This is a research study to evaluate the immediate subjective and objective effects of alcohol after consuming a ketone supplement beverage, compared to a placebo beverage (an inactive substance). You will not know which lab visit you receive the ketone drink, however you will be asked to drink an alcohol beverage (based on your weight), to bring your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) to about 0.050% at each lab visit. The ketone supplement (Kenetik, Vitanav inc, Washington DC) is a dietary supplement that has been extensively studied in humans and is designated by the FDA as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). Its use in this study is experimental. The goal of the study is to see how you experience alcohol, once after drinking the ketone supplement and once after drinking a placebo beverage, which will look and taste the same. We will use questionnaires, blood, and breath alcohol tests to see how your body and brain experience alcohol. We are also interested in if the ketone supplement makes you want to drink alcohol more or less.

Study Description

If you agree to join the study, you will be asked to complete the following research procedures:

 • A consent/screening visit (2 hours): medical history questionnaire, routine bloodwork, a urine drug screen, psychological assessments, and questionnaires to determine eligibility.
 • Complete 2 lab visits (approx. 5 1/2 hrs.), during both of which you will receive about 2 ½ standard alcohol beverages, based on your weight. Also, you will receive a ketone supplement drink on one visit and a placebo drink on the other visit. The visits will include alcohol breathalyzers, blood draws, and questionnaires

Compensation:
• screening visit: $40
• Lab 1: $75
• Lab 2: $100

  • Study Identifier: 852002
