Space-Time Characteristics of Adolescents' Cell Phone Use While Driving

Brief description of study

This research study is being conducted to find out how best to help adolescents develop safe driving habits.
Parents and their adolescent children will be asked to join the study. Teens, with parental consent, will be asked to complete the following research procedures:
1) Answer an online survey at enrollment, then again at about one month and two months about themselves and driving behaviors. There will also be two check-in questionnaires in between.
2) Download an application (app) on their phone which will passively monitor their driving behaviors.

Some adolescent and parents will then be invited to participate in interviews about driving behaviors and their experiences in the study.

You can choose for your adolescent only to participate in the part of the study where we collect data from surveys and driving behaviors the app on their phone. You and your adolescent do not have to participate in the interviews. Adolescent’s participation in the online surveys and collection of their driving behaviors with the smartphone app will last for about two months.

If parent and adolescent participate in the interviews, that will occur within about 12 months.

There are no direct benefits that come with participating in this study. 

Detailed description of study

We are looking for: 
  • Adolescents aged 16-17 years at enrollment
  • Licensed in PA for less than 365 days (1 year) at enrollment
  • Ability to read and write English
  • Has a personal email address and Internet access
  • Uses a smartphone
  • Parent or legal guardian who can give permission for participation is required
Teens that complete all study procedures of the data collection in the first two months will receive up to $85. Parents and teens that participate in interviews will each receive $20.

  • Age: Between 16 Years - 17 Years
  • Gender: All
