Evaluating Time Out: An Intergenerational Respite, Training and Mentorship Program

Brief description of study

The research study is being conducted to find out if Time Out, a respite program, is helpful to families living with dementia. You and your study partner are being invited to participate in this study because you are a patient/caregiver with respite needs related to dementia and caregiving. If you agree to join the study, you and the patient will be asked to complete several questionnaires over the 12 weeks you will be receiving respite care. The Time Out Program is intended to improve patient behavior and functioning and reduce caregiver burden.

Detailed description of study

The research study is being conducted to help evaluate the efficacy of the Time Out program. 
There are two specific aims of this program: 
1.) To evaluate the effect of the Time Out program on caregiver burden
2.) to evaluate the effect of Time Out on social engagement and behavioral symptoms in the person with dementia. 

What am I being asked to do?
· You are being asked to attend a day-long training to learn about providing companionship and meaningful engagement to an older adult with dementia.
· Upon passing a background check, you will be asked to commit to provide companionship to an older adult with whom you’ll be matched for 3 hours a week for 12 weeks.
· At the first visit you will complete questionnaires to assess your attitudes towards older adults with dementia and about your perceptions for meaning in your life.
· You will commit to making one three-hour visit per week to a family’s home where you will provide a break (respite) to the primary caregiver and meaningful engagement/companionship to an older adult with dementia.
· You will repeat the assessments at the conclusion of the study.
· You have the option to serve as a respite worker in this study for one or two 12-week sessions.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
