Discontinuation of Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Discontinuation of Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Brief description of study

The natural history research on MS and the ability to use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to monitor MS progression suggest that risk of relapse diminishes significantly as people age, especially those people who have not had relapses or MRI scan changes for at least 5 years. This study is designed to learn more about the safety of stopping MS medication in this group and compare their outcomes to other stable MS patients who continue taking their MS medications.

You are being invited to participate in a research study because you have multiple sclerosis (MS) without recent disease activity, and have been on a stable MS medication for the past 5 years.

Detailed description of study

This study will have 2 different groups of research subjects like you. One of these groups will stay on their current MS medication, and one group will discontinue their medication. To decide which group you will be in, we will use a method of chance. This method is like flipping a coin or rolling dice. This is called "randomization". In order to participate in this study, you must be OK with being randomized to either group. (No matter which group you are randomized to, you will still be able to leave the study at any time or your doctor may remove you from the study as explained in the section·"can I be removed from this study?") If you join the study, you will be randomized to one of the 2 groups as described above. You will also have some extra assessments done at your regular routine MS clinic appointment or at a separate research appointment today.

If you are randomized to the group to discontinue your medication, your doctor will provide instructions to safely discontinue your MS medication.

This study will be conducted for two years. Up to 60 people from your area will participate in the study. Up to 300 people around the country will be in the study.
