A PILOT STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF YOGA ON FATIGUE AND STRESS LEVELS IN SOLID TUMOR CANCER PATIENTS UNDERGOING ACTIVE RADIATION THERAPY.

A PILOT STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF YOGA ON FATIGUE AND STRESS LEVELS IN SOLID TUMOR CANCER PATIENTS UNDERGOING ACTIVE RADIATION THERAPY.

Brief description of study

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the feasibility and effect of yoga interventions on radiation therapy and to examine the effect of yoga on cancer and radiation related fatigue, and stress levels during radiation therapy side effects in patients with solid tumor cancer.

Detailed description of study

  • We will review your medical record to find out if you can take part in this study.

 Before start of Radiation Therapy:

  • You will begin wearing an activity monitoring device.
  • You will be given the device and instructed on its use
  • You will download the FitBit application on your smartphone
  • You will complete a 6 Minute Walking Test
    • This test consists of walking back and forth for 60 meters (about 200 feet) for 6 minutes to see how far you can walk. This test will be used to determine if you are physically capable of participating in the yoga classes. This walking test will be completed at screening, at the end of treatment and approximately 6 months after treatment is complete.

Once you start Radiation Treatment:

You will be asked to attend Eischens yoga interventions that consist of 75 minutes twice-weekly classes that will be offered by a trained Eischens yoga instructor

Poses will include seated (using a chair), standing, and recline poses. Yoga poses can and will be modified based on your specific needs and restrictions.

Each session will begin with breathing and centering techniques (taking inventory of the levels of energy, posture, stress level, emotions, and breath).

You will be asked to complete 2 types of “quality of life” forms which may take up to 10 minutes to fill out. The forms ask general questions about how you feel. You will need to fill out these forms before beginning treatment, every two weeks during treatment (up to 12 weeks), at end of treatment and approximately 6 months after treatment is completed.
