Intranasal Oxytocin in Hypothalamic Obesity

Brief description of study

The purpose of this research study is to determine if intranasal oxytocin (the hormone oxytocin delivered through a nasal spray solution) will promote weight loss in children and adolescents with brain tumors and hypothalamic obesity syndrome.

Detailed description of study

If you are selected to participate in this study you would come to CHOP for 9 in-person study visits and participate in 6 telephone “safety check” visits over 28 weeks. The study is divided into two parts. During the first part, subjects will receive either oxytocin or placebo. In the second part, subjects will “cross-over” to receive the other treatment – either oxytocin or placebo. During study visits participants will do blood tests, physical exams, metabolic testing, a MRI scan, and some surveys and questionnaires.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions:
    Hypothalamic dysfunction, Hypothalamic tumor, Obesity, Pituitary tumor
  • Age: Between 10 Years - 26 Years
  • Gender: All
