VCRC Longitudinal Protocol for Aortitis: 5507

VCRC Longitudinal Protocol for Aortitis: 5507

Brief description of study

The study is being done to learn more about aortitis, a disease that affects the blood vessels, and can cause swelling of large and medium-sized blood vessels in the aorta, the main blood vessel that leaves the heart. We plan to follow people with aortitis for 10 years to learn about how the disease affects the body over this time period. In the future, we hope the results of the study will help physicians with diagnosing and treating aortitis. We are not studying any new or experimental treatments.

Detailed description of study

Clinical information and blood and urine specimens will be collected at yearly clinic visits. The types of information collected will include medical history details, medication use, physical examination findings, results of laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests (x-rays, MRIs, PET scans). Blood, aortic tissue, and urine specimens will be collected and sent to research laboratories that are looking to discover proteins, genes, and other chemicals that could serve as new biomarkers. Biomarkers are molecules that that can be used to measure biological processes in the body. Patients will be in the study for up to 10 years. This study is a project of the Vasculitis Clinical Research Consortium (VCRC), which is a network of investigators in major North American vasculitis centers. The VCRC is funded through the National Institutes of Health as a Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network with the purpose of promoting research in vasculitis.
