The main purpose of this research study is to assess how quitting smoking affects memory and attention.
Detailed description of study
This program is designed to help individuals with HIV/AIDS quit smoking and involves the use of nicotine patches (brand name Nicoderm CQ) and behavioral counseling. First, you will attend a visit to confirm your eligibility for the study, followed by two in-person sessions during which you will complete several computer games that assess memory and attention. Then, you will receive professional behavioral counseling for quitting smoking, by phone or video call, and 8 weeks of treatment with nicotine patches. The study involves 3 in-person sessions and 7 remote sessions that will be completed by video call or phone, over the course of 3 to 4 months. The sessions last from 15 minutes to 2 hours. We will also ask you to complete brief surveys during each session.
