Behavioral Activation and Varenicline for Smoking Cessation in Depressed Smokers

Behavioral Activation and Varenicline for Smoking Cessation in Depressed Smokers

Brief description of study

This program involves a study of two different behavioral treatments to help smokers who have had major depression. If you are eligible for this study, you will be randomly assigned to receive one of two behavioral treatments: either behavioral smoking cessation treatment or behavioral activation smoking cessation treatment. The study will also involve the use of a medication called varenicline, also known as Chantix. You will be assigned at random to receive either active or placebo medication, which is an inactive “sugar” pill. Chantix is a medication that is approved by the FDA for the treatment of cigarette smoking.

Detailed description of study

The goal of our study is to compare the effects of the four possible treatment combinations on smoking cessation. If you are interested and eligible, you would participate in one of the four treatment combinations: 1. Behavioral smoking cessation treatment + placebo 2. Behavioral activation smoking cessation treatment + placebo 3. Behavioral smoking cessation treatment + Chantix, 4. Behavioral activation smoking cessation treatment + Chantix Participation in this study will require six in-person visits to our clinic and seven phone sessions over about 28 weeks. The first visit is an in-person session to assess your final eligibility for the study. If you are eligible, you will be enrolled and given study medication (active or placebo) to start taking at your second therapy session. You complete a total of eight 45-minute therapy sessions over 12 weeks. Six of these sessions are completed by telephone. You will also take the study medication, either active medication or placebo, for 12 weeks. Following the 12 weeks of treatment, we will ask you to complete a follow-up telephone session at week 27 of the study to some questionnaires and safety assessments. If you have quit smoking, we will also ask you to attend a clinic visit in order to provide a carbon monoxide breath sample. All services offered to you as part of this study, including the medication and the therapy, will be provided free of charge. We will also provide reimbursement for travel to our research clinic.
