Metabolomic Reprogramming in insomnia as a Function of Objective Sleep Duration

Metabolomic Reprogramming in insomnia as a Function of Objective Sleep Duration

Brief description of study

The research study is being conducted to understand how insomnia and the amount of sleep people get at night affect metabolism. Four groups of people will be asked to participate: individuals with insomnia who sleep >6 hours per night, individuals with insomnia who sleep <6 hours per night, individuals without insomnia who sleep >6 hours per night, and individuals without insomnia who sleep <6 hours per night.

Detailed description of study

If you agree to join the study, you will be asked to complete the following research procedures:

There will be a 2 hour virtual visit during which the study will be described, you will have the opportunity to provide informed consent to participate, followed by completing questionnaires and a clinical interview. If you are eligible after the initial visit, you will be sent two devices to monitor your sleep for one week. The first device is a wrist worn watch that will be worn for the duration of the week while completing a daily sleep diary (the diary takes about 5 minutes to complete). You will be asked to set up a home sleep test for one night during this time period.

If you continue to be eligible, you will be scheduled for a week long stay (starting at 5pm on a Monday and ending around 11am on Friday) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During this stay, you will have your blood taken every two hours for 48 hours (the total amount of blood is about half of what you would donate during a blood donation), you sleep monitored on two of the nights and receive hourly "snacks" during the duration of the study. Following the final blood draw on Friday morning, you will be discharged from the hospital and your participation in the study is over.
